LET’S TALK ABOUT:
What particularly moved you about the film?
Chris Gardner – an extraordinary main character who endures a never-ending series of life’s failures – what feelings does Chris evoke in you?
Why? What is behind the way the world treats weak people, life’s losers?
How do you handle your own failures?
Tell us about a failure or mistake that ultimately turned out to have a positive impact on your life.
Tell us about one of your crisis situations, last-resort moments, or hopeless predicaments, and how you managed to get through it.
Chris knows how to solve a Rubik’s Cube, which helped him win over his employer – what talent of yours has been or continues to be useful in your life?
Chris almost literally “chases” happiness – what brings you happiness?
Tell us about a particularly happy event in your life.
The characters in the film hit rock bottom and are very much alone in it – we don’t even see the smallest gestures of kindness from others – is this vision of the world true in relation to the reality in which you live?
Tell us about a gesture of kindness you experienced from a stranger or from someone you would never have expected such a gesture from.
During a game of basketball, Chris passes on some important advice to his son, including the words “don’t ever let somebody tell you you can’t do something” – what do you think of this advice?
“You got a dream? You gotta protect it, fight for it!” – tell us about something you have persistently pursued.
On several occasions, young Christopher tells his dad that he trusts him – tell us about the people you trust the most.
Are you a trustworthy person yourself?
Christopher tells a joke about a man who, during a flood, waits for God’s help and ignores the help offered to him by people – tell us about situations in which you received important help and support from others.
The film’s narrator divides his life into chapters with titles – running, the biggest mistake, the internship – could you also give a title to certain period(s) of your life?
Chris is often treated worse than others – for the internship supervisors he becomes an errand boy – doughnuts, coffee, moving cars – and he has trouble setting boundaries himself – why do you think that is?
Are you able to set boundaries?
“Don’t remove the mountain, but give me the strength to climb it” – we hear these words of prayer during a service attended by the film’s characters – what mountain are you climbing right now?
What/who helps you in that climb?
