DESCRIPTION:

Winner of the Palme d’Or – Cannes 2025

An apparently ordinary situation becomes the starting point for a series of dramatic events. A married couple with their young daughter is returning home in the evening when a car breakdown forces them to stop at a nearby workshop. One of the mechanics offers help, while another — Vahid — observes the situation from a distance and recognizes in the customer a man who may have been involved in his brutal interrogation following anti-government protests.

Vahid, still struggling with the consequences of those events, decides to act impulsively. He begins to follow the man and eventually abducts him, though he is not entirely certain of his identity. To confirm it, he decides to confront the captive with other individuals who may also have been victims of violence from the authorities.

As events unfold, the tension escalates, and the characters’ decisions lead to increasingly irreversible consequences. “It Was Just an Accident” raises questions about the limits of responsibility, the nature of justice, and the price an individual is willing to pay to settle accounts with the past.
