DESCRIPTION:
“Amélie” (Le Fabuleux Destin d’Amélie Poulain, 2001) is a French film directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet. It tells the story of Amélie, a pathologically shy young woman working as a waitress in a Parisian café. After finding an old box of childhood keepsakes, Amélie decides to find its owner and make those around her happy, while neglecting her own needs. A story full of unconventional humor that proves small, everyday gestures can change lives – ours and those of others. The film was a spectacular worldwide success. It won 6 audience awards at festivals in Toronto, Denver, Tallinn, Edinburgh, Canberra, and Chicago. It triumphed at the Karlovy Vary festival and received, among (many) others: 5 Césars, 4 European Film Awards, 2 BAFTAs, and the Golden Duck from the Polish magazine FILM.

LET’S TALK ABOUT:
What particularly moved you about Amélie’s story?
At the beginning of the film, we learn about the small, everyday activities that bring Amélie pleasure, such as plunging her hand into a bag of grain – tell us about what brings you pleasure, what you enjoy.
Amélie had a difficult childhood – eccentric parents, a lack of parental warmth, an imaginary heart condition… all of this made her very shy. Are you ever shy? In what situations?
Lonely as a child, Amélie created a very rich world of imagination. Do you often find yourself daydreaming, fantasizing? What was it like in your childhood?
The turning point in Amélie’s life happened on the day of Princess Diana’s death – tell us about the turning points/events in your life.
The little box found in the bathroom contains childhood treasures – do you have/did you have such a box? What was in it?
What would you put in such a childhood treasure box today – looking back with the benefit of hindsight?
What would you put in a treasure box from TODAY – what is NOW worth keeping in a treasure chest that you will open in the future?
Amélie comes alive when she takes on the mission of finding the owner of the box – she is happy because she has a PURPOSE – what are your goals right now?
Amélie meets a peculiar neighbor, and this conversation marks the beginning of a friendship that has a considerable, positive influence on her life. Do you have a similar experience – an unexpected relationship that turned out to be an important part of your life?
Do you have experience of other events that required you to push past your comfort zone and brought very good results in your life?
Amélie delivers the treasure to its owner anonymously – do you have experience of such selfless kindness – received or given?
Do you ever bring people small pleasures, the way Amélie did?
Two of Amélie’s undertakings seem controversial – the travels of the garden gnome stolen from her father and the letter “from beyond the grave” from her neighbor’s husband – they are fabrications, yet they bear good fruit – they restore peace to the neighbor and motivate Amélie’s father to travel.
Tell us about an event/encounter/conversation that brought you much-needed comfort.
Tell us about someone who was/is an inspiration to you.
Amélie’s neighbor received a fabricated letter from her deceased husband – if you were to write a letter to yourself a few decades from now – what would it contain? What would you like to tell yourself?
Amélie and Nino keep missing each other – when the man finally arrives at Amélie’s door, she needs courage to take the next step – to open the door to her beloved. Do you sometimes feel like Amélie – lacking courage?
Have you ever experienced overcoming a fear – a step that brought good results?
What makes building relationships – friendships/romantic relationships – difficult in today’s world?
What can be done to overcome these obstacles in ourselves and in others?
What does Amélie’s story inspire you to do?
