RECOMMENDATION:

DESCRIPTION:

A biographical drama directed by Miloš Forman, based on the play by Peter Shaffer, who also wrote the screenplay. The film is a fictionalized account of the lives and rivalry of two composers: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Antonio Salieri. It won eight Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Adapted Screenplay.

The story is told from the perspective of Antonio Salieri (F. Murray Abraham), court composer to Emperor Joseph II in Vienna. Salieri, as an old man residing in a psychiatric hospital, confesses his sins to a priest and recounts his relationship with Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Tom Hulce).

Salieri initially admires Mozart as a child prodigy, but when he meets him in person, he discovers that his musical genius contrasts sharply with his irresponsible and eccentric behavior. Salieri feels betrayed by God, because Mozart, despite his reckless lifestyle, possesses a divine talent, while he, Salieri, remains a mediocre composer despite his piety and devotion to music.
